So there’s this gunship thing going on. Click the banner above to find out more. If you’re waiting on the sidelines for some reason so you can pounce later, stop wasting everyone’s time and just back it already. If you don’t want it, you can read this awesome review instead. In fact, if you do want it, you can also read this awesome review. But for full disclosure, this review isn’t awesome. But the gunship is. It’s the circle of life.
So you thought we were done with ROTS? You thought we were done with the curved bubbles? With repaints? With holograms? With bad figures? Haha, joke’s on you! Here’s another figure that checks all those boxes!
The best thing about this figure is the Toys R Us logo on it. For those of you under the age of 7, you probably have no idea what I’m talking about. So while you’re playing on your Playstation 9 and eating a cube of Froosh, why don’t you ask your older siblings. They’ll tell you all about it. Actually, for those of you not following the story, Toys R Us does exist. There are a few “large” stores in some of the giant malls in the US, like the American Dream in NJ and the Mall of the Americas in Minnesota. They apparently sell Star Wars stuff, but not really the Hasbro stuff we’d be interested in, as far as I know. And they’re certainly not in the position to be negotiating for random exclusives like they did back in the day. Toys R Us, for all its faults, was the World Champion of Star Wars exclusives. Good times.
The formatting of the packaging is different than the regular ROTS line. The bubble insert doesn’t have the figure’s name. In this case, we’d have to go by the big callout on the bubble (think “Wookiee Rage!”). Here we have “Holographic Yoda!” and so that’s the name of the figure I guess.
It’s a recast of the 2003 “Blue Saga” figure, numbered 03-15. It was a two-pack that included the little Padawan, Chian. The figure isn’t great, but it’s not the worst. Hasbro was wise to use this as the base sculpt, since the ROTS Yodas of the day were pretty awful, as we have seen recently with ROTS 03 Yoda and ROTS 26 Yoda. Each of those figures scored a dismal 2/10.
There is limited articulation. It seems the 2003 figure was designed to stand there with a cane, and to sit in a hover chair. Interestingly, both of those qualities would probably have done this recast well, except that Hasbro opted to change up the accessories. He’s got the lightsaber again, but Hasbro dropped the cane altogether, and swapped the hover chair for a translucent jungle-themed figure stand. In ROTS, I believe Yoda is shown in holographic form sitting when he is addressing the council. The figure’s cape sculpt worked for the floating chair, but wouldn’t work with a council chair. So as usual, it’s a weird and frustrating mix of screen accuracy and inaccuracy.
There is another scene, where I believe he is standing, which is recreated in the last shot of the gallery above. The shot was recycled from the Aayla Secura review from earlier this week, so forgive me for the bit of laziness. I don’t think this warranted my best efforts. I’ll save that for the Cantina, if I ever get my FedEx notice like many of you bums did.
This Yoda was offered at TRU for free as a gift with purchase of other Star Wars merch, but I believe you were able to purchase it for $9.99 instead, if you preferred. It’s fairly uninspired, but since Yoda did appear this way on screen (sort of), I’m happy to have it.
