OK, it would seem we’re in the final stretch here for the ROTS basic line.  There’s still plenty to do, but this figure marks a bit of a milestone or turning point in the line.  As was seen in the Hasbro poster that someone recently posted in the comments, it ended with ROTS 56 Obi-Wan Kenobi.  Now, once the figures were released Obi-Wan ended up as 55 for some reason, and swapped places with the Mustafar Sentry.  In a way, that’s kind of too bad, because that Obi-Wan should have finished the line, as it represented the cutting edge of 3.75” Star Wars action figure technology in much the same way as the Yugo once did:

But after the planned 56 figures, Hasbro realized that they had a hungry market to deal with, and there was too big of a gap between the ROTS line and the followup Saga Collection, so they scrambled to issue a bunch of repaints on short notice.  Now, this really started with ROTS 57 Commander Bly, which we reviewed Friday.  In my mind, that figure was a makeup for the miss of the ROTS 33 Clone Commander which didn’t make the final cut of the film, and really should have been Bly in the first place.  So Hasbro was quick to make amends and repaint the figure correctly to match the character’s coloring on Felucia.  Also, I didn’t think to write about all this on Friday, so there’s that.

Anyway, the last bunch of figures in the line are repaints.  Some are “smarter” than others, some are a bit of a waste, and some are problematic.  I guess I’d put this Wookiee in the “smart” category, simply because it was an easy way to continue to add variation to our Wookiee armies.  This is a repaint of ROTS 43 Wookiee Warrior (which itself came in 2 variant colors) and was packed with the large Kashyyyk cannon from ROTS 03 Yoda.  So technically, like Bly, this is the third color variation of its respective sculpt, making it a repaint of a repaint.  A Three-paint, perhaps?  I’d rather not get us sued by Pat Riley, so let’s just move on.

The worst thing about the figure is that it has no meaningful accessory with which to interact.  Yoda’s cannon is nonsense, and the figure basically can’t interact with it.  He might be able to hold the handles on the rear end of the cannon kind of like a machine gunner, but it’s not very convincing.  The best thing about the figure, aside from the coloring, is the pleather skirt.  However, as I was photographing mine, I could see that it was starting to flake due to age.

One other note about the figure is the name.  Hasbro called this one a “Commando.”  Now, unless that’s a reference to what’s missing underneath the skirt, it would have made more sense to swap names with ROTS 68 Wookiee “Heavy Gunner”, but we’ll save more detail on that controversy for the future.

So we’ve seen the both the figure and the accessory before, and now they’re two kind of terrible things that are more terrible together…or something like that.  Now we’re going to risk a lawsuit from The Hershey Company.  Maybe I’d better just quit while we’re ahead…

5 Stars.
