R2-D2 figures always make me laugh because Hasbro tries hard to find ways to make each one a little different and more interesting.  He’s in all 87 Star Wars films, and never once changes his costume or loses any body parts.  Even when he got blasted in the head with a direct shot from Vader’s TIE, it was just a flesh wound.  Just every once in a while he gets a little extra dirty, shows off some new gizmo, or makes a silly sound.  And sure enough we have various Artoos over the history of the line that try to reflect all of those things and more.

Previously, we reviewed an earlier ROTS R2-D2 figure that was complete nonsense.  He had a large claw coming out of his head and he came with a see-saw base.  Kewl.  This one brings us back down to reality.  It is a rehash of the Saga figure that came with the millipede assassin things.  That one, in turn, was a retool of the R2 that came with the awesome Jundland Waste rocky base/magnet platform thing.

It wasn’t the best R2 sculpt available, which by 2005 might still have been POTF2 commtech figure that came with the little Leia hologram, or perhaps the VOTC figure.  But it wasn’t awful.  In exchange for a non-articulated dome, a non-removable third leg, and no foot wheels, you get some neat sound effects at the push of a button.  Well, at least you did until it crapped out.  I’ve even changed the batteries in mine, and it just doesn’t work anymore.  So in that sense, it’s not very good because it doesn’t function as intended, and therefore the “gimmick” doesn’t make up for the aforementioned flaws.

Assuming your electronics are still holding up 20 years later, it’s not bad.  It just doesn’t inspire a whole lot, especially since it lacks any accessory, which its predecessors did have.

5 Stars.
5/10 Banthaskulls if the electronics work.  3/10 if they don’t
