I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:  Hasbro had better figure out how to get the 3.75” Droideka to roll up into a ball, or else there’ll be hell to pay.  And by that, I mean no more wasting time with their friends at Toschii Station.  It’s ridiculous, already.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I can say that I’ve always liked the Destroyer Droid figures.  They’re an interesting design, and aside from the inability to roll up, Hasbro has done a really nice job of giving an accurate version of this character.  There have been minor changes to the various figures over the years.  Most importantly, perhaps, is the difference between the TPM version, and those that came after.  In TPM, the “face” has two eyes.  But later, a third central eye that drops down a bit was added.  It’s more like a “nose”, but it is what it is.  As far as figure design, the 2 TPM versions came in regular and battle damaged versions, while subsequent figures had a few additional bells and whistles, like twin blast effects or half of a shield.  This iteration has the projectile firing arms.  The firing mechanism is a spring inside the large “wrists”, which you activate by flicking the back end of the projectiles.

It also has an action feature.  This is reasonably well hidden within the sculpt, although there are two indicators.  The most obvious is the lever in the back that activates the feature.  It consists of the arms swinging back and forward in a firing/pumping action.  The other indicator is that the arms are usually positioned with one forward and one back, although if you finagle with it, you can try to get them into a neutral side by side position.

The head swivels up and down, the shoulders and elbows are swivels, and you get some movement out of the 3 “hips” and “knees” on the legs.

It looks good, and there hasn’t been a major update to this figure, but that’s mostly because Hasbro already nailed it.  It’s just the rolling up feature that needs to happen to make this figure great.  Even still, it’s quite good, going back to its roots in 1999.  I do like the later versions better without the firing missiles, but this one is still pretty decent.

5 stars.
