Mas Amedda was a weird character. He was apparently one of Palpatine’s most trusted advisers, but not being familiar with any of his comic or novel appearances, I have no idea if he really did provide Palpatine with any valuable support, of if Ol’ Sheev just used him to become the public face of the Empire while he himself spent most of his time walking around Coruscant in his robe and slippers drooling and mumbling “Rosebud” from time to time. I suspect Amedda was just a useful idiot, as seems to be the case when he helps convince Jar Jar to hand over emergency powers to the Chancellor, while Palpatine pretends to be thoughtful about this suggestion.
I do know that Amedda was given the title of Grand Vizier following the establishment of The Empire. Which means he’s (retconned as) the guy represented by the red plastic thing from the old Kenner Star Destroyer. And that’s my canon now. Also, he had a lizard tongue.
This figure is the second made of Mas Amedda, with the first one being a much less ornate and imposing presence from the POTJ line sourced to TPM. It’s actually a really nice figure. The sculpt is quite good, with some really nice details, particularly the head/face and the outfit - both the robes and the clothing underneath. The robe is removable, should you want to display it as such, and the tunic is also very well designed and detailed.
For articulation, Mas Amedda has ball jointed shoulders and elbows, with swivel head, wrists, waist and hips. The headsculpt inhibits movement of the neck, but you can get some rotation. The legs are essentially a salt shaker so any articulation underneath has been wasted effort. While it may be surprising Hasbro gave this guy ball jointed elbows, they do suffer from gigantism. They are incredibly bulbous and weird.
For accessories, Mas Amedda comes with a ceremonial staff, which is nicely sculpted with a figurine at the top. Sadly, the plastic is thin and soft, making for an easily bent and limp result over time. But that his how things age in real life, kids! He also comes with a removable lizard tongue, which is creepily long. It’s kinda neat when you plug it into the mouth, but the two holes on either side of the mouth are unsightly when not displayed with the tongue. It is very unfortunate, and hearkens back to the face holes on Dannik Jerriko. For good measure, he gets the “ship” floor/base.
It’s a really nice figure, and was one of the best of the ROTS era. The mouth holes are the worst part, and definitely have a negative impact on the ultimate grade. I’ll give it a 6, because the holes and the limited lower body articulation definitely mean it’s not close to being modern quality, but otherwise it’s an outstanding sculpt and it’s worthy of being in your senate displays.
5 stars.
6/10.
