Here’s yet another figure that is based on almost nothing.  Of course, it was never on screen.  Looking at Wookieepedia, there are only 3 sources for the character - which only has a “Legends” page.  And one of those sources is this action figure. In fact, the character image on in Wookieepedia is the image from the insert inside the bubble.  I’m not sure if there was some pre-production art that LFL gave to Hasbro, or if Hasbro just made this clone design themselves, but there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of source material.

The sculpt of the figure is bizarre.  It takes a step forward by adding ball jointed hips, but 2 step back with the arms that are destroyed by the severe angle of the elbows, which cannot be altered with the swivel point of articulation.  Despite this near-fatal devolution of articulation, the figure actually does its job of sitting in the various seats and gunner position in the AT-TE.  Also, it’s not awful looking when posed with the included standard blaster rifle at the ready.

It’s definitely an odd sculpt.  I assume the elbows were cost savings to offset the new hips.  In addition, the helmet is new, because it is removable - and unless I’m forgetting something (which is entirely possible) this is the first ROTS Clone with the Bodie Taylor head.  Not only is it removable, but it is specially crafted to accommodated the removable “cap” that gives it the distinctive gunner look.  There’s a small tab on the back of the helmet that allows the cap to “hook” on, helping to keep it in place.  It’s relatively well designed so as not to look like the cap is missing when the figure is displayed without it.

The cap itself looks kinda cool when it is fitted to the clone trooper helmet.  Nevertheless, it reminds me of the Guardian Caps that some NFL players use:

Brain damage prevention is for dorks!

And by the way, in grabbing the picture, I stumbled across “Guardian Cap 2.0” which definitely looks less dorky, so I suspect a lot more players will buy in:

Stylin’ and profilin’!

And this is the design they are working on for 2026:

Back to the Future!

Also included is a unique pauldron, which theoretically is removable, but I didn’t try because I have 100% confidence I will break it in the process and injure my groin.  But if you did remove it and also left the cap off, it would be a passable plain clone figure.  It’s just that the stupid elbows are enraging.  For some odd reason, the tank gunner also comes with a Biker Scout pistol.  I don’t know why, as he has no holster to store it, so it just becomes another thing to lose.  And finally, you get the jungle figure stand base.

So while it is a pretty good clone figure when you add up the positives, the frustrating negatives are damning - most of which is credited to the heinous elbows.  But the random pistol and the stand/base that continues to make you think it is supposed to connect to something but doesn’t, all conspire to reduce the score.

5 Stars.
5/10.
