This may seem like a weird figure since it’s doesn’t appear in the film, but it’s another case of Hasbro having to develop figures based on early assets in order to have the product ready on time for the launch. This figure was supposed to be Commander Bly, but LFL pulled the old switcheroo. Per Wookieepedia:
In Revenge of the Sith, Bly was intended to feature red markings, but these were changed to yellow to better fit Felucia’s imagery.
Aayla Secura is even the previous figure in the numbered sequence of the basic line, so it always made sense to me that was the intent, and Hasbro got left holding the bag on a changed character.
To make it weirder, there was a running change. Like most of the running changes (except perhaps the Red/Blue Coruscant guards), it seems these were not planned at the time the line was developed, but were merely rushed into production later due to the popularity of the line. I don’t know this for sure, but as was pointed out by Chris, the Red/Blue guard was the only one of the handful of running changes that depicted both versions in the character photo on the bubble insert. In the case of the Clone Commander, there is nothing on the package that acknowledges the green variant. I believe at some point in the old EU, the red commander was given the name Deviss, but it seems he was based on the same information that Hasbro used to make the figure, and ultimately the character wasn’t really part of any story, he was just featured in some LFL imagery.
Even though the late changes in the film explains the figure, the accessories still remain weird, specifically the zip line thing. I’m not really certain what the zip line is supposed to clamp to. In the photo, I have it rigged off camera, but it wasn’t easy. The clones didn’t use zip lines on screen in ROTS. But you have it should you want to display your figure zip lining.
The articulation is good - in theory - by 2005 standards. It’s similar to that of the 06 Clone Trooper as well as the venerable 03-50 Clone Wars Clone Trooper. But while that level of super articulation was revolutionary, it frankly wasn’t executed all that well. I always found the clones figures of the era to be wonky and hard to pose. And with the Clone Commander, the hard plastic Kama and the pauldron are both extremely limiting to the ability to pose. Additionally, the head seems to pop off fairly easily if you move the arms in any way that pushes up on the pauldron.
As you can see from the gallery, both of these items are removable, but the resulting figure is ridiculous, so put that crap back on the figure before you get hurt. The visor works okay, and does give some extra posing options.
Aside from the zipline thing, you get a pair of pistols that fit nicely in the Kama holsters, as well as a blaster rifle.
I remember thinking the figure was awesome back in 2005, and I have 2 each of both the red and green variants. But as time went on, their value to my collection has decreased dramatically. I hated photographing them for this gallery.
5 stars.
