Sometimes Hasbro surprises us with an action feature that succeeds.  It’s either engineered so well that it is cleverly hidden within the design of the sculpt so as to be unnoticeable, or it manages to accomplish its intended task and actually be a little fun.  On rare occasions, Hasbro hits the 7-10 split and accomplishes both.  Such a figure will bring a smile even to the most curmudgeonly collector.  While I would never support the re-introduction of action features into modern figures, the occasional successful attempt from the past can be inspiring.

This is a perfect example of the complete opposite of that.  In fact, it’s a nightmare of craptastic-ness.

I’m not really sure what Hasbro was going for here.  I suspect they were trying to make a figure that would be a companion to the recently reviewed #28 Anakin Skywalker and provide some awesome Force-fueled dueling action.  While that figure isn’t great, it certainly isn’t awful.  It deserved a better partner than this piece of $#1+.

The figure itself is most assuredly wonky looking.  There’s no hiding the fact that it contains an action feature.  To start, while it is displayed at rest, it looks like Obi-Wan is thoroughly annoyed at someone who is chewing ice cubes, and is about to lunge and slap them upside the head.  In and of itself, this action would be understandable - commendable even.  Chewing ice cubes is, of course, a war crime, and the offender that is vexing Mr. Kenobi would deserve worse than a face slap.

Additionally, the lower tunic (skirt) is flared in an awkward way that is intended to accommodate the left leg when the figure is twisted in preparation for the kick and looks somewhat like an ice skating spin move where the body is perpendicular to the ground.  Also, there’s the painfully obvious mega hinge joint in the right knee.

Included with the figure is a very strange base/stand.  It’s like the second cousin to the “ship” base/stand that comes with many of the ROTS figures.  It is metallic in color, is awkwardly shaped, and has a bizarre sliding lever that accomplishes nothing that I can discern.  The sole purpose of the the stand would be to provide a way to secure the left foot to…something…while the figure performs the kick.  There is a shallowed out area to allow for the included “pole thing” (thanks Tannith) accessory, which I guess is there just for kicks.  (Ha, that was hilarious!)  I know there was that iconic scene where Obi-Wan kicks a pole, so this allows you to recreate the joy.  But seriously, I have no clue as to why the heck there is that sliding lever on this base.

As for the execution of the action feature, it’s…Lame (RIP Khaby).  It’s not fun at all.  The face looks nothing like Ewan McGregor, the accessories are stupid, the figure is horrendous, and the action feature makes me want to kick the figure into the trash bin.

5 Stars.
2/10.
