Mon Mothma.  Politician.  Revolutionary Leader.  Aunt Beru haircut aficionado.  Mon Mothma has appeared in two movies, was cut for time from a third, appeared in The Clone Wars and Rebels, appeared in the best cut scene in video game history, and is in numerous printed materials.  In short, she’s sort of a big deal.  And she’s had exactly two action figures in the 40+ years of Star Wars action figure history, one of which is sourced to the aforementioned deleted scene.  This figure is sourced to the chronologically first appearance of Mon Mothma in Return of the Jedi.

This figure can’t do much, aside from Rebel Queen to Rook 4. That is to say, the figure is the proverbial chess piece.  “Salt shaker” is another designation to describe this kind of figure.  The entire lower body is one solid piece.  You can rotate the head.  You can raise one arm, and when you get tired doing that, you can raise the other arm.  If you’re really daring, you could raise both arms at once, but I don’t recommend it.  One collector did exactly this and had to spend a week in a nervous hospital from the overwhelming spectacle of the event. If you’re still searching for some play value, you can remove the plastic molded outer garment, and you’re left with a figure that looks like a nursing home sunsetter who has wandered off the grounds, shuffling around town in her nightgown wondering aloud when Timmy is going to get back from the war in Europe.

The lone accessory shows you why Mon Mothma is in charge.  She has the biggest pointer in the galaxy.  It’s much bigger than Madine’s.  Ackbar’s is so small that he should probably be ashamed to show it.  No Rebel was safe at a briefing.  If they started dozing off, Mothma could poke them in the chops all the way from the lectern.  Obviously I’ve been giving this figure the business so far.  In reality it’s fairly standard for the era.  Any figure with a floor length skirt/dress had a one-piece solid lower body.  Because Mon Mothma is an administrative type of character, this is a little more forgivable. Aside from the lack of detail on the head sculpt, which doesn’t bear a terrific resemblance, you can easily sneak this into your Home One display without looking jarringly out of place.  It’s a 4 out of 10.

I would very much like an update in the Vintage Collection, but I think it has dubious retail merit.  It would be great if Hasbro had a creative way to get a new Mon Mothma figure into the Vintage Collection.  Even if it were based on Mon Mothma’s Rogue One appearance, I would take it.
