R5-A2 is about as deep a backgrounder as you will find, but ironically, he can be seen in the foreground of his big scene. As Luke and Obi-Wan pull their landspeeder up to the Imperial checkpoint at Mos Eisley, R5-A2 is front and center, rolling from right to left across your screen. He was almost mocking the Empire, by rolling in plain sight while they searched for renegade droids. Those troopers didn’t get the droids they were looking for. I guess they weren’t looking for R5-A2 because he was, like, right there.
That was the one and only time R5-A2 made an appearance in the films, and this is the one and only time the figure was released by Hasbro. It is highly unlikely it will ever be revisited, so for all you OT fans that are missing this from your collection, you’d better fill that void ASAP.
With the release of R5-A2, we could probably do a complete “Scene It!” for the Mos Eisley Imperial Checkpoint. Perhaps some of the figures could use an update, but they’re pretty much all here. The four heroes, the sandtroopers, the landspeeder, R5-A2, a Jawa, a GNK, Rontos, and a couple of vaporators complete the scene for all intents and purposes. Random human pedestrians are the only figures we don’t have, unless you’re one of those psychopathic toy butchers and have made your own.
Cool astromech choice using the still solid BAD mold. 7/10.
