While overshadowed by Greedo shooting first, the 1997 Special Edition release of Star Wars made some character substitutions that have been a sore spot with some fans. This fellow, Sarkan pipe-enthusiast Melas replaced Arleil Schous and his glowing red eyes. At some point in the development of TPM, rumors circulated that Melas was an example of a Gungan, but (sadly?) that proved to not be the case. To create Melas, designers turned Ketowl’s head around and put a red turban over his more elephantine features.
A Ketwol figure was released as part of the Power of the Jedi line, so, in theory, Hasbro already has a head sculpted. Nerd rage is a mighty force which might lead some to boycott a Melas figure out of respect for Arleil Schous, but Melas gets a good 3 and a half seconds of screen time, which is almost as much as Boba Fett, so it’s tough to completely ignore him.
