BoxOfficeMojo is currently estimating a $220M opening weekend for The Last Jedi, which compares favorably to The Force Awakens' numbers of $247M. As expected, the second act of a Star Wars trilogy isn't as lucrative as the opener, but this one is pushing the high end of the early estimates and bodes well for the film's total take by the end of the theater run.
The opening weekend numbers would put The Last Jedi in second place all time. It is also only the second film ever, along with TFA, to break $100M on its opening day.
If TLJ follows a similar path to the end of its run as did TFA, it will have accumulated about $660M by the end of week 3, and would then finish at about $850M, comfortably in second place all time.
Of course it remains to be seen if TLJ has the legs to continue this strongly until the end. While critics were highly favorable in their reviews, fans seem split. Perhaps some fans will be turned off by the different nature of this film when compared to previous installments and repeat viewings are not as prevalent. Or, perhaps fans decide to take in more viewings in order to really absorb all the twists and to get the last look at Luke and Leia.
Time will tell, but The Last Jedi is off to a great start.
