Star Wars: Droids Review, Episode 3

Posted by Dustin on 02/03/18 at 07:04 AM Category: Droids Review

This epsiode finishes the Trigon arc that began in episode one. What a long strange trip this has been. The episode itself isn't particularly strong. For the third time in three episodes, the gang has to escape from a Fromm gang stronghold. 3PO performs his usual schtick, and R2 saves the day. It's not a good sign that this is starting to get old already.

In some ways this epsiode is more about Tigg and Sise Fromm than the heroes. Tigg goes from disappointment, to source of fatherly pride, back to disappointment all in about 10 minutes. On some counts I give the creators credit for having villains who are neither Darth Vader knock-offs nor video game superbosses, but there's still not much depth here. Sise is a poor man's Jabba the Hutt, and Tigg is a poor man's G.O.B. Bluth. I guess Vlix is some sort of poor man's Rex Ryan, if that makes any sense.

In the end, the plot climaxes on the revelation that Thall and R2 had pre-programmed the Trigon to crash into the Fromm's base. So I guess they intentionally got captured and gave up the location of the Trigon to allow their plan to unfold. But that means they didn't bother sharing the plan with their friends and they assumed that they'd be able to escape before the Trigon arrived. On the first point, leaving C-3PO out of the loop on a secret plan is sound strategy. There's a reason he was the only one who had no idea what was going on at Jabba's Palace. But the second point is a bit of a problem. What if Sise decided to kill them? Or lock them up in a not-easily-escapable situation? What if they couldn't find a ship to steal? There were a lot of risks in the plan which accomplished, at best, weakening one crime gang and preventing that gang from destroying other crime gangs.

With the Fromm gang off their backs, Thall and Jord can finally go to that Boonta race thing they've been talking about. I don't want to spoil anything, but this sets up possibly the best, and almost certainly the most famous episode of the show next week.

Best moment: ...I don't know. Maybe when Vlix accidentally spills soup on Sise Fromm (11:14)?

Most WTF Moment: (1:38) C-3PO uses the old antennae on the head trick to momentarily get reception on "R2's favorite program" which involves Astromechs in hats throwing rocks at each other. I would watch every episode of that.

Produced Action Figures: The Imperial Side Gunner (not used by the Empire)
