“Raymus” - From a Certain Point of View

Posted by Bret on 10/07/17 at 07:40 PM Category: Books

"Raymus", by Gary Whitta, tells us what happens in the few minutes that bridges the gap between the end of Rogue One and the beginning of A New Hope, from the viewpoint of Raymus Antilles, the captain of the Tantive IV. We get an intimate look into how Raymus spends his last hour of life; his thoughts, his hopes, and his desire to carry out his duties to the very end. Whitta is able to build a remarkable amount of tension in the few pages of the story, the ending with which we are very familiar. Raymus battles between hope and dread, as his damaged ship hobbles towards Tatooine, knowing that Darth Vader is on their trail. He has given his adult life to the service of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and he knows his story will likely come to end in mere minutes. It's a well done connection between the two films. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next story.

WARNING: This is a plot summary of the short story, spoilers ahead:

The story picks up at the moment in Rogue One when Captain Raymus Antilles hands the data card to Princess Leia in the cockpit of the Tantive IV. The story captures Antilles's thoughts and actions as his corvette flees the scene after the bold Alliance strike at Scarif. At that moment, he has no knowledge of what information is recorded on the data card. His concern is reaching Tatooine, which was the mission prior to the last minute changes which put the Tantive IV docked inside the Profundity, Admiral Raddus's flagship. The corvette had sustained engine damage during a previous mission, and was undergoing emergency repairs while on board the flagship. Even then, it had sustained additional damage when Profundity was disabled as it tried to leave at the end of the battle. As such, when it departed Scarif, it was in bad shape. Antilles knew that whatever data they had, it was probably going to get them captured before they could reach the safety of Tatooine. The hyperdrive gives out moments before the ship could make orbit, and it hobbles at sub-light speed towards Tatooine when a Star Destroyer tracked it down and opened fire. Antilles does everything within his power to secure the ship and give Leia every second she needs to save the tape from the clutches of Darth Vader and the Empire. The story ends with the author revealing Raymus's final thoughts as Vader squeezes the life out of him.
