Funko Smuggler’s Bounty (July 2017):  Droids

After a busy day of house hunting I came home to the newest Smugglers Bounty box waiting at my door. This box's theme is Droids and they delivered. The outside of the box is R2 so you know he won't be inside as a figure.

The patch is C-3PO with a small hologram-like R2. Not a bad patch but I would have preferred R2-D2 as the centerpiece. Personal preference, of course, but also as a small tribute to Kenny Baker.

The pin is a Battle Droid. This is a good hint of what is to come next and is something I like about Funko. They embrace the prequels and The Clone Wars.

With this box, Funko went back to the t-shirt for the clothing portion. I'm sure this was partly because of the dissatisfaction that purchasers had expressed with the extras as of late. Fortunately, the shirt is very well done. Showing us the map to Skywalker from The Force Awakens, the black shirt is super soft and breathable. I wore it the next day.

Finally we have the two figures: our friend with the bad motivator, R5-D4, and a prequel-era C-3PO.

R5 is as detailed a figure as you find and looks better than most of the non-bobble head versions available. I really like how Funko has changed how the droids "bobble" from their first droids. They now give the droids an actually head to bobble whereas before the whole droid would bobble on its legs. It gives the figures character.

C-3PO is not one of my favorite Star Wars characters. Mainly because as time has gone on, he has become almost a caricature of himself. His more annoying antics from ANH and ESB have been magnified since ROTJ and through the prequels and TFA. That being said, this droid figure is fantastic. They got as much detail as they could in the figure while keeping the Pop! look. Take a look at the image from the movie to compare.

Overall this box delivered in every way I needed it too after the disappointment/missed opportunity of the 40th Anniversary box. They included a tease...next box theme Jedi. I'm hoping for a young Obi-wan. Can't wait!
