Earth as the Inspiration for Star Wars Planets

Posted by Bret on 01/22/18 at 01:40 PM Category: Star Wars Misc
The Galaxy Far, Far Away is noted for its planets seemingly being of the single-biome variety. Many times, we would assume that just because we only see a sliver of that planet on screen, the entire planet should have that same biome across the entire surface. If you grew up in the Sahara and had no exposure to any other places, you might think the entire world was an endless array of sand dunes. In many cases, this is meant to be the case, and is indicated as such with a throwaway line of dialogue, such as "the forest moon of Endor," establishing that the entire moon is covered with forests. Or "there isn't enough life on this ice cube to fill a space cruiser."

Nevertheless, our planet's varied climate and geology provided Lucas, and those after him, plenty of source material for planetary biomes. We know that many Star Wars planets are filmed at real world locations, often with little or no special effects necessary to make the place feel otherworldly. You could visit Hoth (Norway), Tatooine (Tunisia), Endor (California), Scarif (Maldives), or Crait (Bolivia) right here on Earth. Robin Andrews from Forbes picks 5 exotic locations on our planet that could very well serve as the site for a future battle in the Star Wars universe.

The Crystal Caves in Mexico seem particularly awesome as a Kyber Crystal cave - something we've seen in cartoons, but not on film. While Crait provided a crystal cave of sorts which was the backdrop for a dogfight for the Millennium Falcon, having characters journey though a crystal cave as part of an exploration of the Force would be pretty cool.

Also, I was particularly amazed by the video (below) of Oldoinyo Lengai Volcano, in Tanzania, which erupts a silvery carbonatite lava that flows like water. The name is even similar to "carbonite", so a landscape where you could get caught in your tracks and "frozen" by lava might be interesting.

There is obviously no direct insight into anything related to Episode IX, but still is interesting to think of these places as making it into a Star Wars film at some point.
