We were just discussing the other day that despite seeing these movies dozens, if not hundreds, of times, we still manage to find the occasional new thing here and there. As I mentioned last Friday, it was only this past year that I realized that Pote Snitkin can be seen inside Jabba's Palace. Well, this past weekend, I was a bachelor while my wife was out of town. You know the expression. When the cat's away, the mice will play...Star Wars. After twenty years, getting the missus to agree to watch one of the Original Trilogy movies is near impossible. So on Saturday, I had to take advantage of my unilateral control of the remote, and pop A New Hope up on the TV. It was during this viewing that I noticed something incredible for the first time.
As I mentioned on the front page, what I discovered isn't some groundbreaking revelation like spotting Walrus Man in the background of the Death Star. No, what I found is quite silly, but after the somewhat serious nature of yesterday's content, I figured we could use some lighter fare. I have to warn you that what I'm about to show you cannot be unseen. Some of you may have noticed this before, but this was completely new to me. Are you ready? Back away now if you don't want your Star Wars worldview changed forever. Last chance. Here we go.
Grand Moff Tarkin is wearing a French cuff shirt under his tunic:

That's right! The commander of the Death Star is a dandy. He's wearing his mess dress uniform at his duty station. What a nincompoop. I don't think I can ever look Tarkin in the eyes again. The other big thing about this discovery is that it means that cufflinks exist in the Star Wars universe. This is mind blowing. Even in the galaxy far, far away, fashion trumps pragmatism. You would think that they would have progressed to magnetic couplers to keep the cuffs of their shirts closed, but no, they're still using a fancy nut and bolt to keep their wrists ensconced in fabric. This assuredly also means that there are cufflink collectors in the Star Wars universe. I guarantee you there are no less than ten pairs in Luthen's shop:
I don't usually like to post silly fare on weekdays here, but I needed this one. If this revelation about Tarkin was new to you, I hope you enjoyed this diversion. Back to the serious business about adult collectible toys tomorrow.
