5/10 Bantha Skulls

Interesting set.  Both figures are resculpts, so there’s nothing new (from a certain point of view) as far as characters are concerned.  They’re both improvements from their 1998 counterparts, which of course, shouldn’t be surprising as they are backed by 10 years of Hasbro evolution.

Luke isn’t bad.  He’s SA.  He has a wide stance, which is unfortunate.  His uniform is textured nicely.  His cape is very billowy, which has a dramatic effect, but makes the figure a little awkward.  He has a lightsaber which he can hold well.  The paint job is simple, and a little sloppy on the face, but the face sculpt definitely gives the appearance of an aged Luke.

Palpatine is one of the stranger figures I have seen.  His soft goods cloak and shoulder armor are removeable, but I wouldn’t advise exercising this ability, as you must then behold the frightening sight of a nearly nude Palpatine, in all his pasty white glory, complete with disturbing skin lesions.  Anyway, for the love of all that is holy, keep the cape on.  He can grip his lightsaber well, and he has a sith lightning accessory that clips on to his wrist.  This clip can actually be hidden under the folds of his sleeve, so it ends up looking pretty good.  The figure is painted well, and is super articulated.  The face sculpt is the familiar sneering version, but his hair is painted in such a way to attempt to make him look younger, like his clone self in the comic.  Unfortunately, he should have a prominent widow’s peak, but he does not.  Also, he has the annoying issue of his ankle joints being unpainted, which damages the asthetic of his feet - if that’s possible, because they are bare.

One additional accessory is a Jedi Holocron with the spirit of Bodo Baas.  It’s neat, and I believe the only incarnation of a holocron by Hasbro in the line.  Unfortunately, the hologram is not very well defined, and it is kind of hard to make out some of the details.  Without careful inspection, it just looks like a bluish/purplish blob erupting out of the holocron.  Neither figure can hold the holocron.

So, there’s some value in this pack, but the figures are resculpts, not new characters.  As such, if you’re a fan of the comic book, or really wanted an upgrade from the POTF2 versions, this is a great set.  If you’re “ho-hum” about the EU, than this might not be your cup of tea.  Personally, I could have done without it.
