5/10 Bantha Skulls

The good:
I’m glad this thing was finally made - one of the most iconic set pieces in the entire saga, and prominently featured in both trilogies.  As a diorama environment, it is excellent.  This is what I would use it for.  It looks good, and represents the movie set well.

It comes with a TAC-style Sandtrooper – a dirty version with the black pauldron.  You can never have enough of these (or so Hasbro would have us believe).
The Womp Rat has been immortalized, though never seen on screen.  It’s nice to have.

The moisture vaporator is a great accessory, and it’s nice that it was included here.

The box art is pretty nifty, although it gives the appearance of a couple of sandtroopers-on-dewbacks chasing down a fleet of sandcrawlers, so it is a bit odd.

The bad:
The price is awful.  This set retails for $50.  I bought mine using a $10 coupon, and it was still overpriced.  I’d set this at about $30.

Owen and Beru are straight repacks from their POTF2 incarnations (the only ones to date).  This is disappointing, especially considering the price.

The weathering on the dome, (several variations have been spotted) is pretty weak in my opinion.

The base of the set is horrible.  Not only does it look like a dried-up pile of pudding (or worse), it is very flimsy.  Happily, you can remove the dome, and place it in a better setting.  The base does offer some depth to the dome, so it appears there is a “downstairs” to it.  When the dome is removed, it reveals the inside of the home, which apparently only consists of a blue table.  The table is not removeable from the base.  But it does give the opportunity to recreate the blue-milk scene.

Perhaps if the base was sturdier and another sandtrooper included, or better yet, a new sculpt for Owen and Beru, this set might be worth $40.  But $50?  No way.

Bottom line, I’m glad to have this piece because it looks pretty good on the shelf, but a few simple tweaks would have had me buying 3 or 4 of these things.
