This is a hard set to rate. I gave it an overall 4/10, which means “okay, but very disappointing”
The Pit / Sarlacc:
I guess this is the highlight of the set because it is all new, and something fans have been wanting for a long time. It’s a decent effort. As you can see from the pics, the sarlacc itself is a separate piece from the sandy pit that surrounds it. The beast is a pretty solid rubbery material. The tentacles are flexible. They may be removeable, but I wasn’t comfortable trying. The mouth is removeable, and is actually two separate pieces. It can’t really “open and close”, but you can kind of coax it into a more or less open or closed position. By removing it altogether, you can go old school, for as you know, the beak was added to the Special Edition of ROTJ. It’s sculpted pretty well, with good paint.
The sandy pit actually has one or two pieces, depending on your point of view. The smaller piece is a solid piece of hard plastic. There are two tabs that are supposed to allow the sarlacc to kind of “lock” into place, but my sarlacc was a bit misshapen, which made this difficult. No big deal, really. The second, large piece, is a crappy piece of flimsly, flexible plastic. If you want, you can use it as a larger set piece to go around the pit. Or you can consider it part of the packaging, and dispose of it. I consider it part of the display.
Skiff:
A good vehicle, but this is the third release of this almost 25 year old mold. It has an extendable plank, that will collapse. It has two break away railings. It has a piece of the deck with flipping action that can toss a figure overboard. It has extendable “landing gear” and adjustable rudders. The paint is very plain. It has some odd looking silver “damage” or “weathering” on the..um..[consults wikipedia...]...starboard side of the skiff, while the port side is completely free of weathering. Perhaps the only damage to this vessel occurred duing the battle, so this would make sense, but it’s poorly done. Othewise, it’s a solid color.
Figures:
These kitbashed monstrosities made from parts that go back as far as POTF2 are a travesty. They all suck. They are poorly painted for the most part, the joints, particularly on Luke, are very flimsy. Most of them can’t hold their weapons at all. The staffs included are warped to hell. In my sample, Han’s right leg was bowlegged, making it almost impossible to get him to stand. They are crap. All of them.
So - you get a pretty good Sarlacc and a nice diorama setup of questionable quality. You get a 25 year old hovercraft with almost no paint detail. You get 5 unbelievably poor excuses for rehashed figures. Was it worth the original price of $70? No. Is it worth the re-released price of $55. Probably not. But hey, if you don’t have a skiff, and were dying for a Sarlacc, this might be your only chance to get these pieces. You could pass on the set, and try to get just the parts you want on Ebay, but I suppose the desireable pieces would be inordinately high priced.
It’s okay. But basically, I wish you luck in your decision.
