Banthapedia article on R2-D2

“R2-D2 accepted his new role and spent the Clone Wars continuously saving this so-called Jedi wonderkid. He got to go to all kinds of neat places- each time unveiling previously unknown abilities to solve some dire problem.” - Banthapedia

Major Variants

*First Day of Issue foil stickers were added to assortments of The Legacy Collection Wave 1 and The Clone Wars Wave 1 figures.  Each figure exists with and without the sticker.  Also, the “Star Wars” logo on the front of the FDOI cards has a metallic finish.

Notes
*Unlike The Legacy Collection which has codes for the numbering system (BD, GH, SL), The Clone Wars line is numbered simply:  No. 1, No. 2, etc…

9/10 Bantha Skulls

I’m not a fan of the animated figures, but this R2-D2 is a really fun little droid!

The sculpt is spot-on.  Hasbro has astromechs down already, but there’s a few details that differentiate him from his realistic version, notably some his helmet detaling (especially the blue square around his eye).  He’s about as well articulated as any astromech.  He’s got a removeable middle foot.  All his feet have wheels.

The paint looks like his animated Clone Wars movie appearance.  There’s a slight weathering wash to the figure that gives it some extra personality.  The dome is a dark metallic blue/gray, vs. the silver/gray we are used to.

R2 also comes with 2 jets that easily attach to the side of his legs.  They do so much more solidly than on the Build-a-droids from the Legacy Collection.

He has a periscope that raises/lowers from his dome.  This is a manual feature.  In other versions by Hasbro, turning the dome executes this action.

He has 2 doors on his front side that hide a claw and a comlink.  The fact that they store away inside his body makes this feature superior to the similar attempt on the Vintage styled (VOTC) R2-D2.

Finally, there is a rope/hook that stores away in a compartment on his back.  You flip open the door, and uncoil a long rope that his coiled inside his body.  The action of turning his dome will spool/unspool the rope.  This feature is FAR superior to a similar attempt with the strange R2 from the SAGA/AOTC line that was meant to interact with a magnetic piece in C-3PO’s detachable head.

This figure is really neat, and I hope some of these features are incorporated in a realistically styled R2 in the future.
